Crom Carmichael on the Demise of American Values Through a Lack of Basic Fundamental Principles in K-12 Schools

 

Live from Music Row Wednesday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. –  host Leahy welcomed the original all-star panelist Crom Carmichael to the studio to discuss the lack of education basics and fundamental first principles for kids in K-12.

Leahy: Crom you had some comments during the break. You wanted to talk about what’s really going on in education today and who cares about the education of all students.

Carmichael: Well, you see across the country now in K-12, it’s even worse than it was. And it was bad. But you see this 1619 Project. You see all this teaching about stuff that really doesn’t have anything to do with the core things that young people should be learning. I’m talking about now math and reading things like that.

Leahy: Basic stuff.

Carmichael: Just basic stuff. If you can learn to read and comprehend then you can learn anything. But if you don’t learn how to read and comprehend then your opportunity for success has greatly diminished. But there are two interesting articles here. one is about how the ACT gaps in ratings.

Leahy: The tests like the ACT and the SAT act that students take in high school to measure their proficiency in basic things like English composition, reading, mathematics, and science.

Carmichael: But they volunteer to take them. These are high school students who would like to go to college.

Leahy: And these tests and these scores are measures that colleges use to determine the quality of the student.

Carmichael: Correct. Correct. But what’s happening here is the Asian population has an average score of 25.6 on the core. And a large percentage of Asians not only graduate from high school, but they go on to college. And so that’s key here. That average among Asian students is among a large percentage of the Asian students who enter High School. Among White students, it is 23.3. Among American Indians and Alaskan Natives, it’s 18.3. Hispanics, 19.9. and African-Americans at 17.9. Now the greatest graduation rates for Hispanic and Black children is charter schools by far.

Leahy: Not even close.

Carmichael: Not even close. And the achievement level in charter schools for Black and Hispanic kids is better than the public schools, especially in your major urban areas. Where like in Baltimore not a single high school, not one met the minimum standard for either math or English. So you have the data. And now you have the story about Betsy DeVos and how the liberals…

Leahy: Former secretary of education under Trump.

Carmichael: Who worked very very hard to expand charter schools and create more choice primarily for Black and Hispanic kids. And the liberals are just waving goodbye to her and calling her all kinds of names as she leaves. So that’s an indication that under this administration Black and Hispanic children who are looking for alternatives to the failing schools that they are forced to attend will not find them.

Leahy: And Joe Biden has said he’s not going to fund charter schools. He really wants to end them. And we have breaking news. We just received a text from our all-star panelists Carol Swain who’s the vice-chairman of the 1776 Commission. Let me read her text. The 1776 Commission has been dissolved and the report will be removed from the White House website today. This is one of the first actions of President Joe Biden. He’s eliminating The 1776 Commission the president established to get the truth out about American history. Now, he’s going to be pushing the 1619 Project and ending charter schools. That’s where he’s headed.

Carmichael: And this effort to change our history is an effort to essentially degrade and destroy our values. And if you don’t have first principles, if a society doesn’t agree on some fundamental first principles, then that society will end up at each other’s throats.
